But leather can do much more — and a recent, deeply personal interior reminded us of exactly that.

In the Atlanta home of global music artist Usher, recently featured in Architectural Digest, leather appears to move vertically — wrapping the wall into a warm, tactile and highly personal architectural element. For us at Goodrich Global, it is an inspiring example of material-led design: where the choice of surface shapes not only how an interior looks, but how it feels and the story it tells. It also brought to mind the same thinking behind a natural leather in our own library — Pavoni Patagonia.

A Wall With a Personal Story

One of the most meaningful spaces in Usher’s home is his study. At its centre sits the piano that belonged to his late grandmother, Tina. Beside it, a distinctive cross-shaped window holds dried flowers from her funeral, turning the room into something far more personal than a beautifully designed interior.

Surrounding this intimate setting are expansive caramel-toned leather-look wall panels, composed in generous rectangular sections with restrained joint lines. The surface creates an architectural rhythm across the wall, and rather than competing with the piano and the personal objects, it provides a quiet, sophisticated backdrop. It is a wonderful example of how a wall finish can become part of the emotional language of a room.

Material-Led Thinking, in Our Own Library

That same instinct — letting a natural surface carry warmth and character — is what drew us to Pavoni Patagonia. It is an Italian nubuck leather, and its appeal lies partly in what it does not hide. Natural markings, subtle colour variations and differences in texture remain visible, allowing the inherent character of the hide to become part of the finished surface. Pavoni lists these variations as characteristics of the material, not flaws in it.

The result is a warmth and tactility that is difficult to reproduce with a conventional manufactured finish. And because no two hides are exactly alike, the material suits designers seeking interiors with individuality rather than uniformity — the variation becomes part of the design. In our range, Patagonia is offered across a family of tones, from Cognac to Soft Beige, giving specifiers a spread of natural, earthy colourways to work with.

Pavoni Patagonia in a warm, caramel Vintage Biscotto tone — natural markings and subtle variation left visible.

From Upholstery to Architecture

Perhaps the most interesting shift for architects, interior designers and specifiers is how leather changes character when it moves from furniture onto an architectural plane. Across a larger surface, leather can introduce:

visual warmth and depth;

a softer, more tactile atmosphere;

natural variation and individuality;

an elevated sense of craftsmanship; and

acoustic possibilities when incorporated into suitable panel systems.

Instead of simply furnishing a room, the material begins to shape the room itself.

How Leather Panelling Works

Beyond upholstery, the wider leather category has developed panel systems that give designers another way to introduce real leather to walls. Technical systems of this kind typically combine leather with lightweight backing materials — sometimes including recycled acoustic felt — so that panels can be positioned against a prepared surface, with mechanical fixings specified for higher-traffic contract settings.

This opens up several possibilities: panels that are lightweight and interchangeable, and systems that can contribute acoustic performance — particularly relevant to hospitality, luxury residential and selected contract environments. It is a contemporary installation approach for one of the world’s oldest natural materials. If you are considering leather as an architectural surface rather than an upholstery finish, our team can advise on which applications suit your project.

Where Luxury Is Heading

What we appreciate about an interior like Usher’s is not simply that leather has been used on a wall — it is where and how. In a room built around a treasured family piano, memories and music, a soft, warm surrounding surface feels entirely appropriate. It does not need to shout for attention; it supports the story.

And perhaps this is where luxury interiors are evolving. Luxury today is less about perfection or excess and more about authenticity, craftsmanship, tactility and materials that carry character. Leather is no longer simply something we sit on — it can wrap a wall, soften an interior, introduce acoustic qualities and become part of the architecture itself.

Explore Material Possibilities With Goodrich Global

At Goodrich Global, we continue to curate innovative and distinctive interior surface solutions for residential, hospitality and commercial environments.
